Young professionals group set up in Timaru
The importance of social connections for young working professionals in South Canterbury has been highlighted in a new group set up to keep "yo-pros" in the region.
The Young Professionals Group is set to host its first event next month in Timaru, with an eye to helping young working professionals create a strong social network in a bid to encourage them to stay working in the South Canterbury Region.
The idea for the group was sparked by businesses which are members of the Professionals Business Connection Group, established by Aoraki Development.
These businesses identified retaining young professionals as a key issue for them and believed helping the young professionals get established with social connections was critical to getting them to stay longer in the district.
The group's leadership team was made up of young professionals who worked across a range of sectors, from agriculture and accountants, to doctors, lawyers and teachers.
Young Professionals Group spokesman Tom Nation said the group provided a social opportunity for people new to town to meet people and get that social friendship whilst also networking.
"People move to Timaru and have no connections when they move to a whole new town.
"It can be really hard to meet new people, especially if you're not involved in sport, you don't have a reason to bump into anyone... especially when people move from university, where you have a good friend group, then to move down, it can be daunting."
