Town Centre Management Group Steering Committee announced
The Steering Committee mandated by the Timaru District Council (TDC) to investigate the feasibility of a Town Centre Management Group (TCMG) or similar, for the Timaru Town Centre has been announced.
Steering Committee Chairman Nigel Davenport, Chief Executive of Aoraki Development, advises a strategic and collaborative approach is required to address the issues and opportunities faced by Timaru town centre. The Steering Committee will explore whether this approach is a feasible approach for Timaru and whether it has the stakeholder support”.
The Steering Committee named is: Nigel Bowen (businessman), Peter Wilson (commercial realtor), Kristy Phillips (business owner and SC Chamber of Commerce Vice President), Jeff Morrison (businessman and landlord), Nigel Davenport – Chairman (Chief Executive Aoraki Development) along with TDC Councilor representatives Dave Jack and Peter Burt.
The Committee’s clear agenda is to:
- conduct extensive research in to what has worked well in other areas (both nationally and potentially further afield) and how a TCMG or similar type group could benefit Timaru
- investigate stakeholder support via broader and more specific consultation to ascertain if the concept of a TCMG has the majority support of Timaru town centre businesses and landowners.
- consider the scope of a Timaru TCMG, how it would be operated, funded and governed
“This is an exciting and important project – one the Steering Committee is looking forward to progressing with all interested parties” said Davenport. “We will be reporting our findings back to council late November and regardless of the outcome, I’m sure the information gained will be an important part of the District Plan Review process”.
“It has been important to have a wide spread of knowledge and experience involved in the Steering Committee including representation from key stakeholders TDC, the business community and the Chamber of Commerce”.
